Photographing Fashion Models Using Available Indoor Light

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I decided to post this photo in the Lighting On Location section because location doesn’t just mean outdoors.  Many times I like to use the available light that is in the room.  In this instance it was a bathroom.  Now  this is something I learned from Helmut Newton.  When he first started shooting he couldn’t afford professional lighting.  He was very poor.  So he used the lamps in his house as his lighting source.  Of course back then he used film and did all his color correcting in the darkroom or used the correct film for such lighting conditions.  But I have come to like the warm color cast that results from NOT white balancing my camera.  This is the original shot.   I was on a tripod using

a very slow shutter speed and a high ISO.  The model has to keep very still OR even a little blur is ok.  It makes it more artistic.  Again, remember there is no right or wrong UNLESS the client doesn’t like it.  In this case my client, Deliverance Poker did like it.

Now I also wanted to try something else so I made the image black and white in Lightroom.  I also cropped it much tighter.  I like both versions.  I just want to show you how you don’t ALWAYS have to use additional lighting to capture a great shot.

This is the black and white cropped version.

They both look great.  I would love to know your thoughts and opinions.

Private workshop is going strong !

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Hi everyone !

My latest private workshop session was with a woman named Debbi from San Francisco.  She flew all the way down to LA to take my workshop and she was great !  Debbi is very artistic and has lots of potential.  After my two day workshop her skills improved immensely.  Great work Debbi !

I encourage anyone who really wants to learn at their own pace and learn what they want to learn, not what others want to learn as well, to take my workshop.  It is one on one with no other photographers to hinder you or if you are more advanced than others you will not be bored with learning skills you already know.

You tell me what you want to learn in two days and you will learn it and remember it !

Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with any questions you may have.  The price for the two day workshop is $995 and includes a model and make up artist.  You will be able to use the photos for your portfolio use if you wish to do so.

Don’t spend years learning by yourself when you could learn much in two days and I will get you headed down the right path to a successful career in photography !

Thank you everyone for all your support.

Shooting latest job

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

I thought I would share these with you guys.  There aren’t many shots of me in front of the lens.  This was a shoot for a lingerie company.  We shot at the Bissell house in Pasadena.  The former owners were the Bissell’s of the vacum cleaner company !  It is now a bed and breakfast.

One of my favorite shots. This was in Palm Springs where the temp was 115 with a steady wind of 50mph. The model was a trooper as was my crew. Shot with a Mamiya 645 AFD and a 17 mega pixel back.
