Fashion Shoot Behind the Scenes

November 16th, 2009

I know you all like behind the scenes photos and videos. I posted the video and now I am posting some photos of me shooting a real fashion shoot !
I had a wonderful crew who worked VERY hard for me and the results are amazing !

You can see how simple the lighting is and yet how effective it is. Those glass panels were lit with two Speedotron units. I decided to do this because I know that frosted glass, which is what those panels are made of, would diffuse the light and wrap around her creating a “heavenly” look and what is the name of the clothing line ?  Gods Daughter.

So as photographers we don’t just click a shutter button. We come up with the concepts that will tell the story behind the clothes.  Notice in the last photo the top of the glass wall comes up to her calves.  One wrong step and she would have fallen 20 stories.  Yes I do whatever it takes to get the shot.  ;-)

If you don’t mind I would love to get a small tech setup for the wrap around light. For example…reflectors used..shutter speed…etc.

Hey Steve, actually I should have taken a picture of the set up. What I did was place one strobe with the standard reflector attached to it facing the panel on the model’s right about 3 feet away. I did the same thing to the panel on the model’s left. I don’t remember what the power setting was but I just played with it until it gave me the look I wanted. My ISO was 100, shutter speed was 1/125th @ f/8 and I was using an 85mm 1.8 Canon lens. You can also create this look in the studio by placing a very large softbox in back of the model facing her back. You’re contrast will be low but if you want more contrast just close down your aperture OR of course you can always increase the contrast in post lol.

Jason I love your work. I was interested in how much of a role do you play in the styling of the shoot. Did the client tell you before hand what they wanted, or have you suggest ideas? Also, how much did things change when you got there?

    Jason Christopher Reply:

    Hi Bauhaus,
Thank you for the compliment. In this particular shoot I was hired to shoot the tank tops the model is wearing. I play a big important role in styling. Yes you have to use the clients clothes of course however, accessories such as jewelry, shoes, earrings etc. I choose with the client. It’s a collaboration. I made some changes on set as far as if she should wear a skirt with a certain tank top or jeans and which shoes she should wear. The role of the photographer is the same on every shoot.
We discussed some ideas before the shoot and yes a good amount of the ideas changed when we got to the location because I had to figure out where the sun was going to set, look at the backgrounds of the lounge and decide if those backgrounds looked good in the shot.
It’s always a collaboration. Remember the client is hiring you for your style, your vision and they want to incorporate that into their shoot.

Thanks Jason…love the feedback and the images. So, essentially you bounced the light off of the panels (one one each side) at a 45 degree angle or straight on (horizontally from the side)?

    Jason Christopher Reply:

    Hey Steve,

I just placed each strobe behind each panel straight on so that the light comes straight through the paneled glass and wraps around her.
