Photography Workshop – Take Control Of Your Shoot

July 31st, 2009

Another successful fashion photography workshop. This time photographer Ken Davie came up from San Diego ! Super nice guy and very eager to learn. I LOVE when I get photographers in here who want to learn ! So with Ken his main issue was that he was intimidated when directing the model, make up artist and wardrobe stylist. Basically he needed to learn how to take charge of his own shoot which is not as easy as one might think.

We started off day one with Ken just observing me. He observed how I handled the photo shoot from start to finish. Started off with the make up process, discussing concepts for wardrobe and lighting.

We shot in studio and outdoors on location. Day two of the workshop I took Ken to an outdoor location. Obviously the best time to shoot outdoors is the last couple hours of the day. Well, when shooting an assignment you don’t have that luxury to only shoot in the last two hours of the day. When you have to shoot a catalog, editorial or advertisement you shoot all day. So I showed Ken how to shoot great photos at anytime of the day including mid day when the sun is at the worst possible position. By using scrims and placing the model in certain areas you can achieve great lighting at any time of the day.

Ken had come from a background of shooting product and he wants to make the switch to shooting people, a MUCH different process. Here are some results of Ken’s workshop. I have video but I am trying to learn how to edit it. If anyone would be willing to offer their service to edit please contact me.

I cannot remember when or where I first became aware of Jason’s photography, but it only took seeing two images to become more curios. There is an extremely simple beauty to his images which is undeniable.

I first contacted Jason in May of ’09 regarding his private workshops. We corresponded via email and telephone several times prior to my workshop and discussed several topics as it relates to photography and the business.

    Day 1:

I arrived at Jason’s a little earlier than I would have expected due to lighter than normal LA traffic. I felt as though I was meeting an old friend upon meeting Jason face to face for the first time. The situation could have been much different, but Jason has a friendly demeanor and I was put at ease. Once our model and makeup artist arrived, we talked together as a team detailing the day’s events and the looks which we would be shooting. I studied Jason’s techniques and mannerisms while he communicated with our MUA (Casey) and model (Katie). He has an aura of confidence without being cocky.

The setup: For our first shot (beauty portraits) we used Jason’s patent beauty light technique. I’ve used this technique (my own version) previously but with limited results and I found it quite interesting to watch and learn as Jason adjusted the lights and modifiers en route to achieving amazing results. For our second setup we switched to 3/4 and full length shots. Again, Jason adjusted and modified the lighting to achieve amazing results. Later in the day, we found ourselves with a little extra time and Jason was kind enough to show me a few lighting techniques which I could employee using my personal equipment. The results were simply amazing.

    Day 2:

A new model for today’s shoot. An amazing young lady named Brianna spent the day with us as we shot indoor and at one of Jason’s secret outdoor locations nestled in the hills of Los Angeles. During the morning shoot, we again focused on beauty portraits followed by 3/4 length shots.

Later in the days we drove to one of Jason’s outdoor locations and we shot images using available light as well as a mix of available and fill flash. I’ve attempted to capture images using a similar technique, but the results achieved while following Jason’s instruction were far superior to my previous efforts.

Summary: I could go on and give you more specifics as to the minute details of my workshop, but I wont. I’d be cheating you out of the once in a lifetime opportunity to work with and make images with such a talented creative artist. I’ve attended other workshops (multiple shooters and 1 instructor) and a few have been ok, but you will learn more with Jason in a one on one workshop than could possibly be learned at a group workshop. Contact Jason if making beautiful images is a priority to you. I did, and it’s paid dividends in the quality of my work.
