New Michael Copon fashion photo

April 28th, 2009

I was going over these photos of Michael Copon yesterday and my eye stopped on this one that I previously didn’t “see” when I first looked at them.   Sometimes it takes a little time away from your work to just let the photos be and come back to them.  You might be surprised at what you find !

The reason why I like this so much is because I caught him in a “moment” HIS own moment.  And that is what a great photo is all about, capturing a moment.

Michael Copon is awesome. I’ve never seen anyone else quite like him — his built, his smile, his style, his character, etc. I hope to meet him one day and I promise I won’t be one of those girls oodling and drooling over him — I’ll try to have a decent convo w/ him, haha! Awesome pictures btw and hey, send him on up to San Francisco, please! :)

Would you share a technique to create such dramatic light falloff?
I mean the cheek is light, and already forehead is in shade – how do you do this?

    Hi Dimitri,

I feathered the umbrella and placed very far back from the model. Then in post I added some vignette.

First of all, thank you Jason for replying to all comments, I as your reader really appreciate this degree of interactivity in the learning process.

I am not quite familiar with the term “feathering the umbrella”, could you please open this up a bit.

And yet another observation: I thought that placing the light source very close to the subject creates rapid light fall-off, and placing it far back creates very even lighting, so the main factor that helps to diminish light level on the forehead in this case would be a vignette, right?

    Hi Dimitri !
You are very welcome. I am very happy to know you are learning. Soon you will have to attend my private workshop and gain even more knowledge as well as hands on learning.

So the term feathering means that you don’t simply just aim the center of the umbrella at your subject. You can twist it from right to left or actually move the stand around your subject also called wrapping the light. When you like the way it looks lock it down. These techniques can be used with ANY light modifier whether it be an umbrella, soft box, grid spot, mola reflector, beauty dish etc.

I moved the umbrella farther away from the model to create more contrast. I apologize if I wasn’t more clear on that. Remember that the closer your light source is to your model, the softer and broader your output will look. Of course it will be the opposite the farther away you move your light source from your model.

    Thank you Dimitri !
