Directing the fashion model

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I know this blog is mainly about fashion photography however, there are going to be many times when you will be shooting a head shot or a corporate head shot or just a family portrait. You MUST be GREAT at directing your subject. Yes fashion models you will have an easier time with because they will have experience but even the best and most experienced models want your input and energy.
Helmut Newton said it best… “My job as a portrait photographer is to seduce, amuse and entertain.”

So my first photography tip is: ➢Talk to and direct your model. Reinforce words like beautiful, nice, great, you look amazing, sexy!  Say it with energy and conviction! Your model will feed off your energy and enthusiasm.  The photographer dictates the overall tone of the shoot.  Don’t be afraid or nervous.  As a matter of fact your models expect you to direct them and WANT you to direct them !  Obviously if your shooting a family portrait you will choose different words other than sexy.  You could tell the family how handsome they all look.  Tell them what a beautiful family they are.  “Parents, you look great!”

Stay tuned for another tip coming soon ;-)

Courage Persistence Tenacity:

Friday, February 13th, 2009

This is a video a friend of mine sent to me recently.  It has nothing to do with photography however, it does have something to do with us as human beings.  MOST of us have 2 arms and 2 legs and are intelligent.  Watch this video.  I have to admit it made me cry but also inspired the hell out of me.

Old Rustic Shack With Character

Monday, February 9th, 2009

So this is one of the many shots from my recent trip to the south.  This was shot in Tennessee.  I love the detail in the wood and how the whole structure leans from being so old.   I did adjust contrast in post and did some extra little adjustments.  There are so many abandonded homes and shacks all over the south.  I find it fascinating that at one time this was a shack or actually it looks like a tool shed that someone took the time to build with their own two hands and used it.  They walked in and out of it getting whatever necessary tools they needed to attend to their farm.  There is a soul that permeates around these places.  Like someone just up and walked away but their sould lingers.

Private photography workshops

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Just a quick note to let you all know that the workshops have been going great ! Everyone is really gaining some great knowledge and having a great time. Remember the workshop is private one on one. I have a professional model and make up artist at every workshop. The photographers who have taken my workshop all agree that learning one on one is so much better than attending a group workshop. You can ask any amount of questions and you get them all answered without anyone else interrupting.

So whether you are just starting out in photography or have been shooting for awhile and want to brush up on your skills, my private workshop is a great way to learn and focus on EXACTLY what you want to learn and not what 12 other people want to learn all at the same time.

Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with any questions !

Thank you !

Photography Contracts

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

The importance of contracts is huuuuuge !  Do any of you use them ?  Are you putting the correct info on your contract ? What questions do you have about them ?  Do you have a cancelation policy ?
