Instructional DVD

August 5th, 2008

Hi everyone.  I can see that you all really appreciate my blog and my advice etc.  I am thinking of putting together a DVD that would actually show from start to finish each technique I have covered.  So you would see a real shoot, you would hear what I say to the model, how I direct them, how I direct and work with my crew, make up , hair, wardrobe, assistants etc. and also how I deal with clients on a shoot.  You would literally get to see how I set up the lights and also get an in depth look of pre production meetings with clients.

Would this be something you all would be interested in. I would price them so they are affordable…$19.99.

I would love to hear your feedback !

Thank you !!

I would love to purchase the DVD. I came across your website last month and am a fan of your work. I see a lot of DVD’s priced at $200+ and only cover camera setting and how many lights. Keep me posted

I think this is an incredibly clever idea, because I, like a lot of other people am a very visual person, I can do well just off of written instructions, but I feel a video showing people what you are talking about in your work is wonderful, and the price is perfect to where it’s affordable for everyone, even my broke behind can afford it!!!!!

Please make sure to cover all the F stops, lens types, lighting techniques for the different styles/looks of your images, that’s one I’m still trying to figure out *lol*

    Hi Jason,

By all means, put my name down for a DVD too. I only discovered your site by accident last week, but have to say it’s one of the best of it’s type that I’ve come across in recent times, both in terms of content and layout/ease of use.

As to what to include in the DVD, perhaps I’m asking a little too much for a 19.99 DVD product, but the things that would interest me would include the whole conceptualization process (how do you “design” an image and decide what it should look like), directing and interacting with models, and the thought process that you go through in post production. One thing I’ve noticed is that so many people don’t know when to stop “photoshopping” an image and ultimately go on to ruin it, when in fact a far simpler image would have been so much more powerful.

It’s the elegant simplicity in your images that I’m really drawn to – that’s not to say they were simple or easy to produce, but they have a wonderful uncluttered feel to them.

Like I said, I’m asking a lot for a 19.99 DVD! I’d certainly be quite happy with a simple “fly-on-the-wall” type DVD of you in operation too!

    - Thorsten.

If it covers getting the best out of models, how to work with them, how to et them working with you… al that kind of thing, then I’d be a buyer…

The only thing I’d suggest is that your price point seems a bit low. May be seen as “so cheap it’s not worth it” by the market?

I can’t wait to see this. I’m always interested in seeing how someone takes concept to execution. Put me down as a definite buyer. Cheers. -Darren

Sounds like a fantastic idea! Your shots are very elegant and fresh, if that adjective is not too outdated. I would love to see you shooting in both natural and studio environments. How to get winning results from ambient and flash for both would be awesome!

I always come to check for new work!

Hi, It would be incredible see you working. I´m a novel phtographer, self-taught person, and I need to learn of the masters. In Spain it´s difficult to have access to profesional workshops that they are worth the trouble. The best are so far away…
Your work is fantastic, clean, perfect…
This DVD would be a great gift for me.

    Thank you.

    Thanks.

I would be extremely interested in a DVD like this. I am thinking $20 would be a steal for a DVD that went through one fashion shoot that let us see you direct your team and the model and in the end showed the final shot straight out of camera and the ending retouched image.

  31. Danilo Says:

    Hi Jason,
This is a wonderful idea. I am not sure if the DVD is available now (May 2010), but if it is may I order one please?

If not and you’re still looking for feedback, then I agree with everyone above. The DVD is an excellent idea to seeing how “you” conduct a professional photo shoot. I am extremely interested in seeing how you communicate and interact with the model. I feel this is the most important aspect to achieving a photo that really connects with the viewer.

You had mentioned you have a private workshop and I am also very interested in taking it, but since I am in Canada and you are in the west coast it will be some time before I can attend. But I would like to build up my knowledge base before hand by watching your video first.

Please let me know at your earliest convenience.
    Thank you,

    Hey buddy,

Thank you for considering the workshop. You really don’t need to watch any videos before attending my workshop. I start at the level you are at and instruct you from there. You take more out of the workshop by actually working one on one with me. Watching a video won’t give you a head start.
The DVD is something I really would love to do however I don’t know how to edit video and am having trouble finding people that will do it in trade. I’ve tried looking for interns. Do you know how to edit video Danilo ? Maybe we could work something out, or do you know anyone who knows how to edit video ?
    Cheers
