back lit fashion
July 7th, 2008Hi everyone ! I apologize for not posting in such a long time. Been busy shooting. I think you are going to love these photos from a recent fashion editorial. So as you can see I had my team, wardrobe, hair, make up, assistants. It was 105 degrees and dry ! Under those conditions everyone really has to be extra aware to be on top of their game, even me lol.
On this shoot I had my two assistants holding a 6 foot tall oval shaped reflector bouncing the sun back into the model. I used an 85mm lens. The hazy look is the result of me letting some of the sun bleed into the shot. The model is Elicia Perkins from Next Models. Any questions please ask !!!

This is a wonderful shot that shows a lot of talent on everyones part.
Was the sun bleed a result of on the set spontaneity or was it part of the plan from the beginning?
Also, do you calculate DOF as part of your preplan meeting?
Thanks,
Monroe

Thank you Monroe.
The sun bleed was the plan from the beginning. I chose this location specifically for that reason. I LOVE to shoot with the sun back lighting my models. It’s something that not many shooters can master. I ALWAYS plan out my shoots, but that does not mean I stick to the plan word for word. I always welcome spontaneity.
As far as DOF ( Depth Of Field), yes I know in my mind if I want shallow DOF or deep DOF.
Thank you !

hi Jason, i’m Kien and i come from Viet Nam ! I’m 19 years old and i’m working as a photographer for one website fashion for teen in viet nam. I really like ur styles on ur photo. So in this pic, if you can, i think you can use 1 or 2 strobe at the the left and right of this model … Because in ur photo, her face look a little dark, and i think it will better if u use strobe
tks for read !
wish you reply !

Hi Kien,
Thank you for your comment. One thing you will learn about fashion is that is is all subjective. There is no right or wrong. I lit this shot this way because that is the look I wanted. If you like her face more lit then you are free to light it with more light. It really just depends on your vision.

Jason, I think this photo is perfection! It is one of those photos that make me say, “I wish I took that one!”
Also, it was nice meeting you the other day.

Im way late on this but I LOVE this shot. I tried a somewhat similar test of something like this last week. The reflector you used…was it a white bounce…gold? How do you keep the bleed/haze from overpowering the subject in yoru shot?

Hi Eric, thank you for the compliment. The reflector was a 6 foot tall gold made by Photoflex. I RARELY use gold but this time it fit the look. I am never afraid to try something new. I use a lens hood to keep from having too much flare hit the lens but I also move around until I find the right angle and it really is not easy. Not every single shot comes out perfect like this, only about every other shot does lol
You should take my private workshop. You will learn techniques like this and many more.

I knew it, I knew I would say it again. I love this shot! THIS is my favorite shot of yours thus far.
Question time;
Is the gold reflector on camera right or camera left and how far? And sorry, but do you have both your assistants holding the one reflector or do you have two reflectors held by each assistant? Sorry for the silly question, but it’s just something I was curious about.
Thanks,

Hi Danilo,
There is no such thing as a silly question.
The reflector is on camera right held by both assistants because it is so large. The reflector is about 5 feet away from the model.
Thank you for the question my friend !
