macro beauty photography
So here is something I am very proud of. I used my Canon 100 2.8 macro and just two lights with one silver reflector under at chest level to give that catch light in the bottom part of the pupil.

Jason you have an awesome site and eye. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Where did you place your two lights for this photo?

Thank you Marquee,
I placed one strobe on a c-stand directly in front and above the model with a small white umbrella, another strobe bottom left for that flair. This strobe had a 30 degree gridspot on it.

such a beautiful shot!
hope I’m not asking a too silly question(sorry beginner here) but you mention you use a 100mm macro lens…
when do you actually use the macro mode on the lens itself, did you use it for this shot and do you also use it for halfbody/fashion? does it give any advantages when only shooting fashion/beauty or only when one does really shoot macro?(sorry for the many questions)
All the best from Holland!

Amazing shot!
Sorry for the absolute beginnersquestions but can you tell me when you use the macro function on your lens? also for beauty and fashion shots? or only for extreme close ups? would there be a benefit of using it while making halfbody/fullbody shots?
many thanks for your help!
best regards from The Netherlands,
Jay

Hi !
Thank you so much for your comments and questions. To answer your question, first of all there is no such thing as a silly question
I use the macro mode when I am shooting 2 inches or closer to the subject. So if I want to capture eyes, lips or even flowers I use macro. For this shot I did not use the macro mode as I didn’t need to.
When I am shooting half body or full body fashion I use my Canon 85mm 1.8. When I shoot beauty I use my 100mm but I do not use the macro setting. So basically I use macro only when I want to get in really tight, 2 inches or less.
Thank you again !

I’m glad I read this post.
Most times I shot with my 70 - 200 mm lens, this of course will increase or decrease my DOF when I zoom in and out. No I will stick with my 85mm or 105mm for fashion work.
Thanks for the insight,

Edit to previous post:
I ment to say, Now that I read your post I will be using sticking with my 105mm for fashion work.:

Hi Jason, first day on your blog and its 2:12am i have prolly asked a question on each one of your post already lol
I am just excited that i found somewhere that helps me out a lot even though i am a newbie.
Sweet my future looks so much more brighter with your help.
Last question of the night, thanks for being patient.
The 85 and 100mm u are taking about, are they both fixed lenses?
thanks,
poyan

Poyan you rock ! I am VERY thankful for your comments and questions !
Yes the 85 and 100 are fixed focal length lenses. Also, the aperture of the 85 is 1.8 and the 100 is 2.0 Fixed or prime lenses give you the best quality and will also cost more money.

November 26th, 2008 at 1:36 am
Jason Its 4:18am in ontario right now, and ever since i discovered your site and how helpful and fun it is knowing im actually getting the right knowledge that i need from it, it has led me to stay up like never before and just read up all over the internet about this art.
But i came across this
http://www.digitalphotoshopretouching.com/retouching.htm and its crazy how they doo it, would love to learn, so cool..
Jason was there Post Pro done on this shot of yours? and if there was, how long of a process was it?
Thanks

I suggest auto focus IF you don’t have perfect vision. However I do use manual focus in situations when the light is so contrasty that the camera cannot find focus on auto.

Poyan thank you so much my friend. I always appreciate your comments and feedback.
For this image the ONLY post that was done was smoothing of the skin. The lighting, make up and hair are just as you would see it right out of the camera. I strive for that every single time. You’re always going to have to retouch skin, that is a given. My retoucher said it took her about 8 hours.
