clean beauty lighting
This is a wonderful model with perfect skin. I lit her from underneath with a medium strip bank from Photoflex. Then I place a medium softbox above her and a little bit in front of her. Shot digitally with my Canon 1DS and a 100 mm 2.8 lens. What makes this shot amazing is the model’s expression.
How does a photographer pull that from a model ? Ahhhhhhhh the question of all questions. My answer is simple. TALK TO YOUR MODEL CONSTANTLY. Keep telling her how beautiful she is, how amazing she is. Throw out adjectives like, vulnerable, shy, nervous, sexy, timid, diva-like, I think you get the idea. A great model is a great actor as well.

I agree, that talking to te model is really important. A lot of times the models seem to think they know what you want, and end up giving you something that is all wrong. I’ve also been in situations where the model looks good, but just doesn’t know what to do. That is why I learned to talk to them, and be really directional with them. At first they seem uncomfortable if the aren’t professional models, but eventually they get over, get used to it, and get better. All of the lighting is nice, especially the added light for detail in the hair.

As long as you remember the words of Helmut you will create lasting images that will stimulate your viewer
“My job as a portrait photographer is to seduce, amuse and entertain.”

Hi Greg,
Thank you very much. I work very hard to create that “electricity” between model and photographer. Once it is established the energy is amazing !

One of your secrets is you have amazing models. That, with a combination of your amazing talent, you get some beyond amazing images.
Better than magazine quality.

Wow Barry, thank you ! Yes having great models is VERY important. If you are in a city that has modeling agencies use those models.
Models go on castings and see very important people. Your work will be seen by those people.

It takes great talent to orchestrate amazing shots like this.
Very inspiring work indeed.
Find your site couldn’t have come at a better time.
I think a a lot of photographers are looking for that edge or that one thing they feel is keeping them from progressing to the next level.
Having such a talented and knowledgeable person willing to inspire and share information is a GOD send. I for one have hit the next level just from visiting your site and reading your blog.
Thanks for being so generous,
