I don’t remember my exposure settings but I would think it was at least 60th because it was handheld and the shot is sharp. I don’t use gray cards, maybe I should but everything seems ok right out of the camera. If it aint broke, don’t fix it lol

Spot metering has nothing to do with making the colors dull. The only thing that makes colors dull is either desaturing in post or wearing dull colors.

How long was your exposure and do you ever use a gray card/color card for shooting?

Since spot metering only measures about 1 - 5% of the subject would that have made the colors dull?

So in this shot I used the sun reflecting on the sand and water to illuminate her face. No reflectors or flash was used. When you are out on location, look around you and you will be surprised at what natural elements you can use to reflect light onto your subject. I could have used a reflector however it would have given me a harsher look and I wanted a soft look. The only other thing I could have used which would have still given me a soft look would be the use of a large white foam core. Of course you would need an assistant or your MUA to hold it.

It’s all about exposure. When I back light my models I set my camera to center weighted metering. This will expose for the shadows while still holding some detail in your high lights.
