Anyway, I'm seriously impressed with the lens, despite the lack of practice and having the time to work out the best way to use it (with regard to manual vs auto focus and infinity focus etc.) and the new experience of zooming with my feet... lol! I'm using the 24-105 IS F4 L at the moment that covers most of what I shoot so the new lens has to be a good investment and appears it will be a good choice. I mainly use a beauty dish or hard light but will give the brolly a go, it certainly works here! First of all the lens is a great lens. I always get clean crisp sharp photos. Canon makes great glass. I have never had a problem with perspective distortion so put that out of your mind. I just placed the umbrella so that I wasn't blocking the light. I never am too concerned with that. You just work around that if it becomes a problem.
